Aiseirigh Nan Gàidheal

Aiseirigh Nan Gàidheal

Geoffrey May and Rebecca-Lynne MacDonald-May, Saturday 6pm to 7pm

For over a decade, Geoffrey and Rebecca-Lynne MacDonald-May have hosted and produced Aiseirigh Nan Gaidheal, The Awakening Gaels.  Hosted bilingually, Gaelic -English, ANG features Gaelic songs and rockin' Celtic instrumental music.  Aside from commercially available material, ANG also features traditional Gaelic singing from the MacDonald-May's own collection of field recordings, as well as material recorded for the show at the Marcel Doucet Studio.  At the studio we recorded Jim Watson, Director of Gaelic at Nova Scotia's Highland Village, his wife, Frances MacEachen, Gaelic Cultural Officer Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, and Colin Watson, great Gaelic singers all.  We also recorded Alice Freeman, a wonderful singer from Inverness, as well as Willie Francis Fraser from Deepdale.  Willie is well known as the finest exponent of traditional Cape Breton step-dancing, teaching on both sides of the water, but he is also a super Gaelic singer, one of our favorites!  We also recorded Coisir an Eilean, a chorus of twenty Gaelic singers (including R.-L.,Geoffrey, Willie and Alice).  Coisir an Eilean was formed by the late Maureen Rankin MacKenzie.  Now under the direction of Father Allan J. MacMillan, Coisir an Eiliean provides Gaelic presence at community concerts and ceilidhs around Inverness County.  Coisir an Eilean counts Lauchie Dan N MacLellan and Dan Allan Gillis among its early members.  In 2001 we prepared ten shows for the Highland Community Radio in Scotland.   These shows are archived on this site (See under menu Programming, Listen to our Special Shows).  In addition to the usual mix, these show included Gaelic Language lessons, Chi Mi Bhuam, produced by Frances and Jim, and Major C.I.N. MacLeod's "Scottish Gaelic for Beginners".  Aiseirigh Nan Gaidheal is broadcast Saturdays from 6-7, and re-broadcast on Two Lochs Radio in Gairloch Scotland.
